How to choose a wedding band

A practical checklistFrom a band that gets booked

To choose a wedding band, check four things. That they are a real, regular band you can watch on video. That they have recent reviews from actual couples. That the quote is clear and itemised. That you deal with a real person who runs the bookings. Hear them live first, ask who you will be talking to on the day and read the contract before you pay any deposit.

See them play live first

Start with video. A wedding band lives or dies on the live experience, so a few polished studio photos tell you almost nothing. Look for real footage of a real crowd, ideally more than one clip, so you can see how they hold a room rather than how they pose for a camera. If a band has no live video at all, treat that as a warning sign.

Read recent reviews

Reviews are the closest thing to a guarantee. Look for recent ones from named couples on Google or a wedding directory, then read how the band handled the little things as much as the music. A long trail of happy couples is hard to fake. One or two reviews from years ago is not the same thing.

Get a clear, itemised quote

A good quote spells out what you are paying for. How many are in the band, how long they play, what the travel costs are, what is included for the ceremony or the DJ and what the deposit secures. Be wary of a single round number with no detail, since that is where surprises hide. You should never have to guess what is and is not included.

Check who you actually deal with

Ask who you will be dealing with between now and the wedding. Ask who actually runs the booking. With us you deal directly with Jesse, who founded the band and oversees every wedding, so nothing gets lost in a chain of agents. A band that puts a real person in front of you is a band that takes your day seriously.

Read the contract before any deposit

Before you pay anything, read the contract. Check the date, the venue, the lineup, the times, the total and the cancellation terms. A proper band will have all of this in writing and will be happy to talk it through. If someone wants a deposit before you have seen anything in writing, slow down.

Questions worth asking before you book

  • Can we see recent live video of a real crowd?
  • Are you free on our date? Do you take one wedding per day?
  • Who will we deal with between now and the day?
  • What exactly does the quote include?
  • Can you cover the ceremony and the reception too?
  • What happens if a member is ill on the day?
  • Can you learn our first dance?

If the answers are clear and the video backs them up, you are most of the way to a great choice.

Choosing a wedding band: common questions

How do you choose a wedding band?

Watch them play live on video, read recent reviews from real couples, get a clear itemised quote and make sure you deal with a real person who runs the bookings. Then read the contract before you pay a deposit.

What should you ask a wedding band before booking?

Ask to see recent live video, whether they are free on your date, who you will deal with before the day, exactly what the quote includes and what happens if a member is ill. Clear answers are a good sign.

How do you know if a wedding band is good?

The strongest signals are recent live footage of a real crowd and a steady trail of reviews from named couples. A good band also gives you a clear quote and a proper contract, not a vague number and a verbal promise.

How far in advance should you book?

As soon as you have your date and venue, ideally twelve to eighteen months out. Good bands take one booking per date and the best dates go first. See our guide on when to book your wedding band.
